Prime minister delivers a message of cautioned hope for 2014
On January 1, 2014, Prime Mininster Helle Thorning-Schmidt delivered a New Year's address to the country of Denmark. In her speech, Prime Minister Thorning-Schmidt discussed topics such as its removal of chemical weapons in Syria, the welfare system, eldercare, and also patriotism. A large portion of the Prime Minister's address was about the welfare system. In a country where students are given money to educate themselves and safety is the country's top priority, the Prime Minister encourages citizens to put more investment into the national welfare system. Eldercare was an issue in 2013 and it still seems to be an issue. Although she did mention the topic, the Prime Minister did not answer the question of whether or not there will be an eldercare in the future of Denmark. Instead, she simply said, "We [the government] will decide that ourselves." After all of the issues of 2013 had been addressed, the Prime Minister concludes the address with a simple, yet powerful phrase, "This is my Denmark, this is our Denmark."
The New Year's address was indeed powerful. I believe that the Prime Minister was able to cover all the issues that Denmark has had to deal with during the year of 2013 and their solutions to the issue. Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt began the speech on a somewhat heavy tone, reminding the people of Denmark of the crisis that Denmark has had for the past two years. She then eases into the topic of Syria, eldercare, and the welfare system. These topics have been decisions that were made by the Denmark government during the year of 2013. Then, she simply ends the speech on a patriotic note that left listeners prouder of their country than ever.
The New Year's address is an important speech because the speech reminds citizens of the hardships that the country had overcame together. The speech also informs listeners of the decisions that were recently made by the country's government. Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt welcomed the year of 2014 with her fellow citizens of Denmark and also informed the citizens of what had been decided and what issues needed to be worked on. By having a New Year's address, the citizens of Denmark will be well informed on the political issues of their country.
